College Football Playoff Is Set
The College Football Playoff Committee just had arguably the most difficult decision in the history of the playoff this year. The #1 and #2 teams should've been obvious, and they were. With the BIG10 Champion Michigan Wolverines claiming #1, and the PAC12 Champion Washington Huskies claiming #2. Now the question was, who are the final 2 teams? Well, the options were between a 1 loss, SEC Champion Alabama Crimson Tide squad, an undefeated ACC Champion Florida State Seminole squad, a 1 loss, back to back National Champion Georgia Bulldog squad, a 1 loss BIG12 Champion Texas Longhorn team, and a 1 loss Ohio State Buckeye squad.
This decision was extremely difficult, and the rankings headed into Champ Week were (1) Georgia, (2) Michigan, (3) Washington, (4) Florida State, (5) Oregon, (6) Ohio State, (7) Texas, (8) Alabama. Now the controversy lies within one game, and that was week 2 when Texas and Alabama played head to head. Texas would win this game by 10 which is why they're #7, and 1 spot up on Alabama. Now, the committee has never not put in the SEC Champion, and this year's SEC Champion happened to be Alabama, so they're in. But if Texas wins, which they did, you have to favor the head to head win, and which is why if you put Alabama in, Texas has to be in. So the final four were Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama respectfully. Hence, an undefeated Power 5 Conference Champion was left out for the first time in the history. That team was Florida State, and this is why this was such a tough decision for the committee to make.
Do I agree with it? No. Did I expect it? Yes. My reasoning is because of money. The SEC is so highly rated, and has such a big fanbase that there was just no realistic way they were going to keep the SEC Champion out of the Playoff, and they didn't. Alabama was let in sitting at 12-1, losing to Texas week 2. Like I stated above, since they had to put in the SEC Champion, that means they had to put in Texas because Texas beat Alabama, and are also a 12-1 Conference Champion themselves. Now although QB Jordan Travis is injured does not mean Florida State is not a top 4 team, and it is extremely disrespectful towards them. FSU got moved down from 4 to 5 after winning, which is unheard of. This was disrespectful because you play to win the game, and if you go 13-0 and win your conference, but don't make it, what is the point? Especially when you were ranked #4 for most of the season, it doesn't make sense to move down the very last possible week, even after a win. It is not fair.
