Visual Literacy

My interpretation on visual literacy is quite simple. Understanding a topic or learning from a picture/chart/etc. I have used visual literacy many times in my life, but the most common uses for me have to be when I am doing sports stats or writing about sports. I look at a ton of graphs and charts to help me determine and gather data, so that is the biggest use for me when it comes to visual literacy, and I find it very helpful.

When looking at a chart, the first things people notice are the good things, and the bad things. They don't look into the actual stats that are going into it though. This leads to a downfall when considering the pros and cons of visual literacy. When looking at a College Basketball efficiency rating chart, you look at who is in the top right corner, as that is the most efficient both offensively and defensively. Nobody ever looks at the little things and the other teams'. The only issue with visual literacy is that it creates a "thumbnail" type of hook, as the first thing people see is the most important.

However, I use visual literacy all the time when analyzing stats and making everything organized. It makes my life way easier seeing stats given on a chart, rather than scattered into multiple run-on sentences. That just leads to a mess and unorganized stats, and that is how I lose my stats. When I put all my stats on one big spreadsheet, it makes it way easier to navigate and analyze what I am looking at, and it overall makes my life so much easier.
